Visitors from PA

Camp Richard is located approximately 3 miles from the Steamship and Hyline boat docking facilities. Biking is the suggested form of transportation and activity for visiting scout troops. The island is covered with numerous bike paths. Plan on bringing your own bikes, or you can rent them here. Itineraries and maps are available at the local bike shops.

Each visiting troop should have a support vehicle. Reservations for your vehicle need to be made as early as possible. Contact the Steamship Authority for vehicle and passenger reservations and/or the Hyline for passenger accommodations only. The vehicle is necessary to move the troop gear from the steamship to the camp and back. It is also needed to provide necessary transportation in case of emergency. As well as run errands such as any necessary grocery shopping, or to pick up any scouts with bikes who need help along the bike path.

If you do not plan on bringing a support vehicle but plan on walking onto the ferry with bikes, you will need to coordinate your plans with the Steamship Authority, or Hyline, as space for your bikes may not always be available.

Two of the Bike rental companies are located at the Steamship wharf. They offer services for Scout troops that include outfitting bikes for each member of the troop, and transportation of the gear to the camp and back.

For more information on the ferries, and bike rental companies, see the “Resources” page on the website. Camp Richard has a number of tenting sites. Each has running water, a campfire ring for cooking and comradeship, and a flagpole. In addition, there is an Adirondack Shelter site with four shelters. Each shelter accommodates at least eight scouts comfortably, and if available, can be reserved for an extra $100.00 per group, per night.

There is a large communal council type fire ring, a pavilion with a gas grill and picnic tables, a large ceremonial flagpole, a shower house and lodge, and a trading post, and even a horseshoe pit, all located in the central area of the camp.

Nantucket has strict recycling rules that we must adhere to. Only household trash, like compostable items are allowed in the dumpster. That includes paper. Cardboard can be burned in the main fire ring. All trash must be placed in clear, see-through trash bags. If you do not have clear, see-through plastic trash bags, you will be required to take the trash home with you when you leave.

Aluminum cans, plastic containers, and glass should be placed in the receptacles labeled for that purpose. No double-bagging, please.

There is an outdoor chapel, and a refrigerator building with refrigerators available.

There is large, open, athletic field for sports activities, with a volleyball and basketball hoop set up, and an obstacle course. Use of the obstacle course must be supervised by an adult. In the office there is sports equipment, including basketballs, soccer balls, horseshoes, and more.

Upon arrival, please look to the bulletin board at the end of the parking lot for any instructions as to where to set up camp, and what time to expect a welcoming orientation briefing.

Each visiting troop is encouraged to assist the camp by performing a small service project. (Usually an hour or less.)

As part of the departure process there may be a simple clearance inspection of the campsite. Please be sure the shower house, and the lodge are as clean and neat as you found them when you arrived
